Mars is the first Planet to play here. The performance is inspired by earlier recordings, especially Holst’s, who insisted Mars should be played fast and Karajan’s, who made the tam-tam loud. Although Boult was the premiere conductor, it seems he ignored Holst’s advice to make Mars sound ‘more unpleasant’ (quoted in Michael Short’s book on Holst). Hopefully the version here would meet the composer's standard of unpleasantness. Holst finished Mars before the start of the First World War, but foresaw its chaos. C R W Nevinson’s pictures of that conflict reverberate with tension, bleakness and devastation. Links: Score of The Planets: https://musescore.com/openscore/score...
