Sampled orchestras, programmed instrument by instrument, on Digital Audio Workstations, have been performing the classics for years. Soon AI will be able to extract the stems from a range of real orchestral recordings and engineer a ‘creative’, perhaps even ‘optimal’, re-performance. In the meantime, notation, the language of orchestral scores, is in the middle, available for human interpretation. Are the results worth listening to? This performance uses free orchestral samples in the free notation program Musescore Studio. It draws nuances from real orchestral recordings, but mostly plays safe, attempting to persuade you that yes, you can trust a notation program with a symphony. But judge for yourself. Dvorak premiered his ninth symphony ‘From the New World’ in New York in 1893, to great and lasting acclaim. Influenced by Native and African American music, it’s still fully Dvorak’s, and a great example of the symphonic tradition since Beethoven of reintroducing in the final movement themes that appeared earlier. The music is accompanied by paintings of the American landscape that might have inspired Dvorak even before he arrived in the US. Links: Score downloaded from this page: https://musescore.com/sheetmusic?text... (I am actually using one of the scores on this page where I found and fixed multiple issues. There are more accurate scores on the same page. I should have used one of those. Check the star ratings and ensemble sizes.) Pictures of works by Albert Bierstadt, Samuel Colman, William Stanley Haseltine, Francis Augustus Silva and Thomas Moran obtained from Wikimedia Commons and other web locations believed to be copyright free.
