How I crossed America - Episode 0: Discovering The Transamerica Eastern Express - Vlady Was here Imagine deciding to cross a continent by bicycle, alone. Planning such a trip means dealing with maps, routes, itineraries. In my case, it's the first time on such a scale. In this first introductory episode, I explore the best options for crossing the United States in the best possible way, and I ask myself questions about the route to take, but also about my capabilities and the real chances of making it. Maps reveal that nature is never geometric: rivers, valleys and mountains dictate the route. Like the pioneers, cyclists must adapt, following the terrain rather than forcing a straight line from start to finish. The most popular trail in the United States, the TransAmerica Trail, stretches 4,200 miles, but for someone like me, arriving from Europe on a strict 90-day visa, that distance is a challenge I don't feel comfortable taking on. Searching for alternatives, I found the TransAm Eastern Express, a route that seemed designed for non-US cyclists with limited time, like me. This route offers a quicker and easier ride in the east, preserving the best of the classic TransAmerica Trail in the West, traversing the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone and the beautiful landscapes I've dreamed of. It cuts down on the steepest climbs, takes scenic rail-trail rides, and starts in Washington, D.C. - making it ideal for my trip. In this episode, I do all the math on this newly found route: with the help of TransAm Eastern Express I would need to ride for 3,780 miles for about 80 days, meaning 80 km per day (50 miles) with 8 rest days. This seems within my reach, although such a long journey is not just a physical challenge, but a mental one: it meant abandoning routine, comfort, and certainty. I will not have a home, a city, a predictable schedule, for almost three months. A dream perhaps, but will it be a dream trip? Am I forgetting something, something I'm not considering? More importantly, will I ever make it? How will it go? This is exactly the story I hope to tell, the story of "how I crossed America."
