Contemporary rural-urban divisions in America are the result of long-term demographic, economic, technological, and social trends. AEI’s Brent Orrell and the Brookings Institution’s Tony Pipa have teamed up to host a series of “On the Front Porch” conversations with authors of recent research on issues facing rural America. Dr. Orrell and Dr. Pipa will host AEI’s Kevin R. Kosar, who wrote the foreword for a new edition of Edward C. Banfield’s Government Project. First published in 1951, Banfield’s book delves into the history and ultimate failure of Casa Grande Valley Farms, a New Deal farming cooperative in Arizona. Dr. Orrell, Dr. Pipa, and Dr. Kosar will explore Banfield’s work on the complexities and challenges of government-sponsored social and economic development programs, especially in the context of rural America.
