(7 Feb 2014) British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday made a heartfelt plea to the people of Scotland to choose to remain part of the United Kingdom. In seven months' time Scotland will hold a referendum on independence from the UK. In a speech at east London's Olympic Park, where he invoked the spirit and success of the British Olympic team, Cameron told Scottish voters: "We want you to stay." He said separating Scotland from the "brand" of the United Kingdom would be like separating the waters of the River Tweed and the North Sea. "If we lost Scotland, if the UK changed, we would rip the rug from our own reputation," he said. "The fact is, we matter more in the world if we stay together." Cameron described the United Kingdom as "brave, brilliant, buccaneering, generous, tolerant and proud". He said the UK had been built "brick by brick" by people in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. "This is our home, and I could not bear to see it torn apart," Cameron said. He also told people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that, despite not getting to vote in the referendum, "do have a voice". "You do have an influence. So get on the phone. Get together, email, tweet, speak," he said. "Let the message ring out, from Manchester to Motherwell, from Pembrokeshire to Perth, from Belfast to Bute, from us to the people of Scotland - let the message be this: We want you to stay." He said the UK would be "diminished" if Scotland were to leave the union. The Scottish independence referendum is set to take place on 18 September. Some four million (m) people over the age of 16 and living in Scotland are eligible to vote.
