The Cats Whisker is a modern Lure or Streamer pattern that is primarily used to catch Rainbow Trout in stocked commercial fisheries. Widely regarded as a classic but deadly pattern it does not really imitate anything natural on first inspection but could be seen as small fish to the Trout, especially in the UV spectrum that Trout can also see in. The fly should have been called the "When All Else Fails" as it has saved me from many a disappointing blank day, however another fly pattern has that name. From experience, the shade of fluorescent yellow/green that Chartreuse is, can be an effective colour for attracting Rainbow Trout and this is incorporated into the original pattern. There are many variants out there with different colour combinations and tied on a variety of hook sizes but the original recipe that this video demonstrates is normally tied on a Size 10 or 12 Extra Long Shank Lure Hook, in this example a Kamasan B800. Some notable examples include the same dressing but using Black Marabou instead of White, there are Booby variants, Fritz bodied variants and the Tournament sized variants on Size 10 or 12 Nymph or Wet Fly Hooks. There is even a fully floating variant known as the Mr Softie, which I first saw tied by Davie McPhail. I will eventually include videos on the common variants. The fly can be also be fished in a variety of ways aswell. Commonly fished on an Intermediate or Sinking Line and with a varied retrieve. It is good practice to count down the depth until you start to get signs of activity such as sharp tugs or tightening of the line during the retrieve. Once you have found the depth, vary the retrieve method and speed until you get a solid hit. I find a steady but fast rolly polly retrieve with a slight bend in the rod (banned at some fisheries so be careful) is very effective, speeding up after a hit to either set the hook as is or induce a better hit. It can also be fished on a floating line using the above methods without the depth finding or as a point fly as part of a team fished dead drift. Personally I would choose Buzzer patterns for the droppers.
