Cracker.lennox harold “im sort of a displaced person.and those songs are about the rootlessness that exists in America. Where did the name come from Mr Jones, meaning and band name. The Counting Crowes burst onto the music scene in the early 90’s with their debut record that blew up much to the band’s surprise. Counting crows fought tooth and nail to get what they wanted, not compromising. The intent was to have an album that was a slow burn. Well it ended up backfiring, resulting in COunting Crows releasing one of the biggest selling albums of the decade. Today let’s discuss how the band got so big, so quickly Born in baltimore, frontman Adam Duritz father was a doctor, a pediatrician who studied the effects of alcohol on pregnancy. Duritz family moved a lot because of his father’s medical school, residency, and army stint (lennox harold), residing in several cities - boston, el paso, denver and houston, before settling in berkeley california.. Duritz remarked to Spin “I don’t have any real roots.” His lack of roots played a huge part in shaping the lyrics behind the COUNTING crowes debut record, something we’ll talk about in a bit. ” Duritz was exposed to the Jackson 5 and Barry Manilow growing up and in the seventh grade his father took him to see ELO at the Oakland Coliseum further boosting his interest in music. This coupled with listening to funk groups like the Ohio Players and his father’s folk records Duritz had an eclectic education in music. He was soon singing Kiss’ Beth to girls at hebrew school and led zeppelin’s black dog at barmitzvah’s. By the late 80’s Duritz was enrolled in Berkley studying English, and he soon started to write music. But this period in his life was a particularly rough time. He was dealing with mental health issues and it was only exacerbaed by drinking and drugs - mstly pot and halucinogens. - he remarked to rolling stone he had one very bad acid trip that lasted a long time. Adding And somehow my mind learned how to duplicate it. It’s a very bad thing when you start having acid trips without taking acid. Later on in his career, he talk about dealing with depersonalization disorder. It was by 1989 he dropped out of berkley and hopped on a plane to Europe remarking. I jumped on a plane and told myself that I’d never come back unless I was with a band. I was kind of drifting back then,” he says. “To say I was in bad shape would be putting it very, very nicely.” He was also dealing with the demise of a romantic relationship with an australian girlfriend he met on the greek island of corfu. She’d later go on to inspire the song Anna Begins on Counting Crows first album. Eventually Duritz headed home and was able to straighten out his life thanking his parents and doctor. Upon returning home he was sharing a place with Camper Van Beethoven member David Immergluck. At the insistence of his roommate, Duritz answered an ad in the paper, which got him a gig in the band the himalayans which featured bassist Marty Jones, who is the Mr. Jones, something we’ll obviously take more about. Duritz was also playing in two other bands at the time including Sordid humor, an REM influenced group but none of his outfits seemed poised to have success. Duritz grew frustrated with his prospects as a musician as it didn’t seem like was going to be successful recalling to roling stone “I had nothing to fall back on,” “All I knew how to do was write songs and play them in clubs. But I never had any interest in anything I did. And I could see that what I was doing wasn’t very good in a lot of ways. I’ve always been self-destructive, and I thought this was the ultimate in self-destruction–building an impossible life for myself.” But that was about to change. Duritz soon met guitarist David Bryson through a mutual friend. Bryson owned a 16
