In the 60s My grandfather did a lot of side jobs, and a disproportionate amount of seemed to be from ‘little old ladies”. One I remember well was a “little old lady” named Hulda. I thin she called almost every 2 or 3 months with some electrical problem, and she was very nice. However her conversations always had the exact content. They were start with “hello – is Amos there” I would answer that he was not and could I take a message. This outline is how every message was every time. 1. She would explain the electrical problem he had. 2. She would then explain that even though she did most of her home repairs and yard work she was “scared to death of electricity” 3. She would then give a glowing compliment about what a wonderful person and great electrician my grandfather was. 4. She then would share her thoughts about diet and exercise. It was not until a decade later that I found out what an incredible Hulda Crooks was. I found a documentary about her and took excerpts of it to tell the story about her life Her accomplishments were at 66 years old she climbed to the tor of Mt Whitney (The tallest peak in California) And then climbed it almost year until she did her last climb when she was 91. She did take a second trip to the top that year by helicopter with Congressman Jerry Lewis to rename the peak next to Mt. Whitney after her – Crooks Peak. It took Congressman Lewis 5 years to get the peak renamed because Congress did not like to name peaks after living people. He holds the following records: 1 Oldest woman to climb Mt. Whitney 2 Oldest woman to climb Mt Fugi in Japan 3. In 1982 she set the world for fastest woman to run 1500 meters in the Senior Olympics At age 95, she was still walking 2 miles a day. She died at 101 25 years ago I edited the attached video to under 10 minutes, The main part of the video was has her 20 climb with 3 news people to the top of Whitney. It is interesting to watch, because it will be the only way I will ever see what it is like up there. Another thing that I thought of was I could not do anything she could when I was ½ her age. The only consolation I have is is I was never afraid of electricity
