In this video we board a Sydney Trains M Set and take a ride on the Southwest Rail Link, Sydney's newest railway line. The new line is 11.4km (7.1 miles) in length and branches off the existing South line at Glenfield, where we start the video. Along the way the train stops at Edmondson Park & Leppington, the terminus of the new line. The line opened on the 8th February 2015 with trains initially running as a half-hourly shuttles between Leppington & Liverpool. From the 13th December 2015 the new line was properly integrated with the rest of the Sydney Trains network with trains running to & from the city via Granville on the T2 Inner West & South lines. Trains run every 15 minutes during peak hour and every 30 minutes at other times including weekends. As well as the two new stations at Edmondson Park & Leppington the project also included a major upgrade to Glenfield station (including new flyovers for the East Hills line) and a new stabling yard at Rossmore which has the capacity to fit 20 trains. The line was built to service Sydney's growing south west. The suburbs of Edmondson Park & Leppington may appear to be rural now (especially the latter) but will soon see a large increase in population & new housing due to urban sprawl. The South West Rail Link is a good example of providing infrastructure in a growth areas before much of the new residents move in. As urban sprawl continues there is provision to extend the line further west or north. It is a possibility one day that the line may be extended to Badgerys Creek which will be the site of Sydney's new airport. Date: 25th January 2016
