The wife of a Conservative councillor was jailed for 31 months after calling for hotels housing asylum seekers to be set on fire. Lucy Connolly, 41, posted the expletive-ridden message on X, formerly Twitter, on the day three girls were killed in Southport. The former childminder called for "mass deportation now" and added: "If that makes me racist, so be it." Connolly, whose husband serves on West Northamptonshire Council, later sent a WhatsApp message joking that the tweet to her 10,000 followers had "bitten me on the arse, lol". She admitted a charge of publishing threatening, abusive or insulting material intending to stir up racial hatred. Jailing her for 31 months at Birmingham Crown Court, the Recorder of Birmingham, Judge Melbourne Inman KC, said the sentence was intended to "punish and deter". "When you published those words you were well aware how volatile the situation was," he said. "That volatility led to serious disorder where mindless violence was used."
