Photography is literally everywhere now — most of us share snapshots of our lives on Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. Frederick Jon Chen has taken it a step further, and aims to impact lives all over the world through what he calls “photo-giving”, instead of photo-taking. He shares his experiences in tsunami-ridden Japan, where his photographs become more than just material gifts — they encapsulate memories. Mr. Frederick Jon Chen had, in London, bought a Rolleiflex 3.5F camera from a 60-year-old Greek on account that he continued making stories with it as it had for 40 years. Since then, he has endeavoured to make sense of his curiosities through his camera. Photohoku, which Frederick found out about in June 2012, was, to him, a marriage of his photographic inclinations and a desire to engage in disaster-stricken communities. In March 2013, Photohoku 22 was conducted in Onagawa and Ishinomaki, Japan, where he helped to restart family albums for two Izushima communities. Today, he is involved in Photohoku 2.0: the push for Photohoku to go beyond serving disaster-stricken communities and to create positive impacts globally. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
