In this video, we learn about the European greenfinch. QUICK FACTS: • Lifespan: 13 years • Length: 6 in • Wingspan: 10 in • Weight: 28 g • Family: Fringillidae Description The European greenfinch or simply is a small, plump songbird of the finch family. The male is olive-green and gray, with a yellow wash becoming dull outside the breeding season. Females and juveniles are dull year-round with mostly brown plumage. Greenfinches have conical bills, adapted for seed-eating. Vocalizations: Call and song European greenfinches produce a variety of call notes, typically during flight. The song of the male contains is a medley of twittery, wheezy, and trilling notes and is accompanied by a butterfly-like flight display. Distribution and range Greenfinches are native to Europe, Southwest Asia, and North Africa. They are sedentary in most of their range, but northernmost populations migrate south for the winter. Introduced populations can be found in parts of Australia, New Zealand, and South America. Habitat They inhabit open woodlands, woodland edges, thickets, farmlands, and gardens. Migratory birds can be found in a wider range of habitats, including coastal environments. Diet and feeding habits Greenfinches are primarily seedeaters but also feed on buds, berries, and even insects. They forage shrubs, bushes, and fields. During winter foraging flocks can be seen feeding on the ground. Greenfinches are known to frequent backyard feeders, favoring sunflower seeds. Nesting and breeding European greenfinches nest in solitary pairs or loose colonies. The bulky nest is made of grasses and moss and is lined with rootlets, fur, feathers, and plant fibers. It is often located in the forks of trees or concealed among bushes, shrubs, or other dense vegetation. Females lay up to six eggs which they incubate for around 13 days. The chicks are covered in down and leave the nest at about two weeks old, fledging a few days later. Relationship with humans The European greenfinch was the inspiration behind the poem The Green Linnet by William Wordsworth. Status and conservation Although they are widespread within their range, populations have declined due to harmful agricultural practices. They are, however, classified as least concern. #avibirds #bird #birdwatching #europeangreenfinch #chlorischloris
