Why Trauma Feels Worse Before It Gets Better “If healing feels harder than before you started, it doesn’t mean you’re failing — it often means your nervous system finally feels safe enough to release.”…or . Many people feel think healing is failing when the pain gets louder - but this is often when healing is actually in progress! By the end of this video you … gain greater awareness about the healing process and what to know when you are on the right path One of the most confusing and frightening parts of trauma recovery is this: You start healing — and suddenly things feel worse. The emotions intensify. Memories surface. Your body reacts in ways you don’t understand. And many people think: “I must be doing this wrong.” “I was coping better before.” “Maybe I should stop.” But what’s actually happening is something very different. For a long time, your nervous system stayed in survival mode. It kept you functional by suppressing pain, emotions, and sensations that were too much to process at the time. Survival first. Feeling later. When you begin healing, your body starts to believe the danger has passed. And when that happens, it finally releases what it has been holding. That release can feel like things are falling apart — when in truth, they are coming back online. Trauma doesn’t leave all at once. It leaves in layers. And each layer often feels louder before it dissolves. This is why healing is not a straight line. It moves in waves. The problem is that we’ve been conditioned to believe healing should feel like relief immediately. So when pain surfaces, we judge ourselves — and that judgment creates more stress. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening?” Try asking, “What is ready to be released now?” When emotions intensify, your job is not to fix them. It’s to stay present with them — without abandoning yourself. This is where compassion becomes medicine. You might notice urges to distract, numb, overwork, or self-criticise. Those are old survival strategies trying to regain control. But you don’t need to go backwards to feel safe again. You need to slow down and reassure your body: “I’m listening now. You don’t have to shout.” Healing feels worse before it feels better because the body is finally trusting you enough to feel. And that trust is not a setback — it’s progress.
