A Splendid Land opens a window onto two centuries of Udaipur’s extraordinary royal paintings, outstanding masterpieces of Indian art. Around 1700, artists in Udaipur began creating immersive paintings that express the moods– bhava– of the city’s palaces, lakes, and mountains. These large works and their emphasis on lived experience constituted a new direction in Indian painting. Debra Diamond takes on a journey that begins at Udaipur’s centre and continues outward: first its lakes and lake palaces, then to the city, onward to the surrounding countryside, and finally to the cosmos. She also explains the emotions surrounding the monsoon, the annual rains so crucial to Mewar’s prosperity. Exploring art, culture, and the senses, Diamond speaks to Festival Co-director and writer William Dalrymple on how painters shaped politics, emotion, and identity, offering fresh ways to experience the layered beauty and histories of early modern South Asia. Art historian Debra Diamond’s publications include Garden and Cosmos (Jodhpur painting), Yoga: The Art of Transformation, and A Splendid Land (Udaipur painting). As the Elizabeth Moynihan Curator of South Asian and Southeast Asian Art at the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, her forthcoming exhibition re-examines Pahari painting. William Dalrymple is the author of the Wolfson Prize-winning White Mughals, Duff Cooper Prize-winning The Last Mughal, and the Hemingway and Kapuscinski Prize-winning Return of a King. His book, The Anarchy, was shortlisted for the Duke of Wellington medal, the Tata Book of the Year, and the Historical Writers Association Award, and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations. Dalrymple has held visiting lectureships at Princeton, Brown, and Oxford, where he is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls. He was presented with the President’s Medal by the British Academy and was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers for 2020 by Prospect Magazine. He is a founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival.
