FIRST EDITION: Tell My Mother, I Like Boys by Suvir Saran Suvir Saran in conversation with Asad Lalljee, Launch by Shobhaa De From Delhi to New York, Suvir Saran has ‘plated’ joy while swallowing shame. In this uncompromising reckoning, he strips away the gloss of celebrity to confront the double life beneath it—the family silences, the cultural bargains, illnesses weathered, and the cost of refusing himself. The result is a narrative alive with appetite and peril—raw, exact, and unsentimental. Saran chronicles a boy too afraid to speak becoming a chef who goes on to reshape Manhattan’s understanding of Indian cuisine. Food is the thread—salvation, self-expression, and a bridge between worlds. At once intimate and unsparing, Tell My Mother I Like Boys is a coming-out that becomes a coming-home, and an argument for living without apology. Widely recognized as a “trailblazer extraordinaire,” Saran’s iconic restaurant Devi became the first non-Northern European restaurant in North America to earn a Michelin star — an achievement that shifted the flavour of culinary history itself. Dish by dish, he reshaped India’s cultural presence in New York, building bridges of taste, challenging conventions, and opening doors for a new generation of South Asian chefs and creators. Yet behind these extraordinary accolades lay a vastly different story. Tell My Mother I Like Boys peels back the layers of Saran’s public brilliance to reveal the tender, bruised core beneath. Suvir Saran is a Michelin-starred restaurateur, author, and cultural storyteller celebrated for his contributions to Indian cuisine. He founded Devi in New York, the first Indian restaurant in America to earn a Michelin star, and currently serves as Culinary Director for Avas Wellness in Alibaug. The author of five books, including his memoir Tell My Mother I Like Boys, Suvir weaves his experiences in food, travel, and culture into his storytelling. Living between Mumbai and Delhi, he brings a profound curiosity, musical sensibility, and passion for learning to his work, exploring identity, heritage, and the transformative power of culinary artistry. Asad Lalljee is Senior Vice President of Essar Group, CEO of Avid Learning, and Curator of the Royal Opera House, Mumbai. A former Madison Avenue advertising executive, he has transformed Avid Learning into India’s leading cultural hub and revitalized the Royal Opera House. He serves on FICCI’s Tourism and Culture Committee, the Executive Committee of the Kala Ghoda Association, and the advisory board of the Mumbai Urban Art Festival. An early adopter of technology, he curated 240 online programs during the pandemic and explores AI and the cyberfuture. Asad holds a B.A. in Economics from St. Xavier’s College and an M.A. in Global Marketing Communications from Emerson College. Shobhaa De is a renowned author and columnist. She is a pioneer in contemporary Indian literature, known for her gripping narratives that dissect urban life's complexities. After studying Psychology at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, she ventured into journalism, founding and editing magazines like Stardust, Society, and Celebrity.
