The meeting at the presidential Elysee Palace was the first bilateral encounter between the two leaders since the February. Despite their differences in the past both heads of state promised to work together for the future of Europe. Blair assured Chirac of Britain's commitment to the EU despite Monday's announcement that his country was not yet prepared to begin using the European currency. At a press briefing after the dinner Chirac and Blair condemned the recent Palestinian suicide bombing on a Jerusalem, but insisted that the road map for peace must be followed.
