It is young Beethoven refining his notions of what came before, and previewing what is to come. In the Menuetto we can clearly hear the seeds of what were to become his form defining scherzos; a first movement that feels both Haydnesque and Italian influenced; a fourth movement that seems to lay the whole notion of such music to rest, beginning like Mozart and morphing into music which is unmistakably Beethoven. This is the Young Giant, but it is also great music which earns an audience for its own sake. Beethoven was already a mature artist when he wrote this. This performance by Toscanini from 1939 is full of youth and freshness, and its relevance holds up beautifully. This is one of the great conductor's most outstanding performances of Beethoven, and one would be hard-pressed to find another as good.
