Speaker Bio: Shannon Stephenson is a dedicated and licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor based in Albuquerque, NM. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of New Mexico and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Social Work at Ohio University. Shannon serves as the Director of Recovery Services at Krossroads Integrative Health and Recovery Solutions in Albuquerque, where she plays a crucial role in helping individuals overcome addiction and achieve lasting recovery. With extensive experience working with the criminal justice population, Shannon has become an invaluable member of the recovery community. Shannon's passion for helping others heal extends beyond her professional life, as she is actively involved in initiatives that support individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Training Description: This course provides participants with practical tools and evidence-informed strategies to effectively manage and de-escalate high-risk situations in community-based behavioral health settings. Through a focus on verbal and nonverbal communication—including body language, tone of voice, and intentional redirection—participants will learn how to recognize early behavioral indicators of escalation and respond in ways that prioritize safety and respect for all involved. Emphasis will be placed on techniques for setting compassionate yet firm boundaries, managing personal stress responses during crisis moments, and fostering a supportive environment that reduces the likelihood of conflict. By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to navigate challenging interactions with confidence, clarity, and care. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify key verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques used to manage high-risk situations in community support settings. 2. Recognize behavioral indicators of escalating situations. 3. Apply appropriate strategies to de-escalate conflicts while ensuring personal and client safety. 4. Develop skills to maintain clear boundaries in interactions with clients, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
