In Uganda, as in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, there are relatively few veterinarians, and public veterinary services necessarily focus on surveillance and control of priority diseases. This can create gaps in routine livestock healthcare and advisory services, particularly for smallholder farmers, which private-sector veterinary paraprofessionals (VPPs) can help fill. Through targeted technical and business training, gender-responsive approaches, and support to enabling environments, FAO and partners, with support from the Gates Foundation, are implementing a model to strengthen farm productivity by empowering VPPs as frontline providers of preventive livestock healthcare. This webinar shares evidence on how VPPs are improving farmers’ access to animal health services, promoting better husbandry and disease prevention, and increasing their client networks and income, while exploring how to build on these results.
