Effortless Birch Bark Fire starting and a Woodman's Winter Warming drink.

A frosty foraging forest hike, I search for one nature's most versatile trees the humble Birch, which provides me with ample bark to start a small fire in order to prepare a hot winter warming mulled apple juice. Just a little note on harvesting Birch bark, only take what the tree gives you, i.e. the little curls that naturally form on the outer bark, these can be gently removed in long strips that are loaded with flammable oils that make fire starting quite effortless with a little preparation. The Mulled Apple juice was simple recipe made using cloves, cinnamon, star anise, pressed apple juice and slices of orange and boiled for 5-10 minutes. Nothing beats a spiced drink in the cold woods while practising fire lighting and some bushcraft skills.
