At the end of Gospel of Luke 8, we meet a man possessed by a legion of demons—living among the tombs, chained, isolated, and feared. With a word, Jesus sets him free. The outcast becomes restored. The broken man becomes a witness. But that’s only the beginning. In this message, we turn our attention to another person delivered from multiple demons—Mary Magdalene. Like the man in the cemetery, she was once an outsider. Yet after encountering Jesus, she becomes one of the most faithful, courageous, and influential figures in the early Christian movement. Who was Mary Magdalene really? Not the forgotten woman. Not the scandalized myth. Not the conspiracy theory. Scripture tells us she was healed by Jesus, traveled with Him as a disciple, supported His ministry, stood at the cross when others fled, and became the first witness to the resurrection (Gospel of John 20). When Jesus called her name, everything changed. Saint Augustine called her “the apostle to the apostles.” In this sermon, we explore: • The connection between the calming of the storm and the calming of spiritual storms • How Jesus restores those society casts out • The truth about Mary Magdalene’s identity • Why she may have been called “Magdalene” — the Strong Tower • Her role as the first witness to the risen Christ • How God consistently uses outsiders to accomplish His purposes From Joseph to Moses, from David to the disciples—God makes a habit of choosing the unlikely. And maybe that includes you. If you’ve ever felt disqualified, rejected, overlooked, or beyond God’s reach, this message is for you. Jesus doesn’t just accept the outsider—He brings them in and sends them out with purpose.
