A Musical Joke is a familiar work by Mozart, written in 1787. It is famous for being littered with errors. Some of these are very obvious, such as wrong notes, crazy cadenzas and botched endings. But there are many other more subtle blunders including poor attempts at a fugue; parallel fifths and octaves; clunky modulations; clumsy and repetitive harmonisations; and ridiculous horn trills. The question is, why did Mozart write this error-strewn work? Most commentators suggest that the work was written to parody the bad compositions and playing of other musicians of the day. However, another intriguing theory is that the piece may be something of a homage to his pet starling. Mozart kept the pet bird for over 3 years from 1784 to 1787. It was a good mimic, and Mozart taught it to sing his own works, thought it often got notes wrong. He was clearly attached to it, as when it died, he gave it a grand funeral, complete with funeral procession, gravestone and funeral poem. The bird (we do not have a record of whether it had a name) sadly died just 10 days before this piece was listed in Mozart's catalogue. Some observers have noted that this work bears more than a passing resemblance to the vocalisations of a starling, with wandering melodic phrases, occasional wrong notes, unusual trills and abruptly ending melodies. We will never know Mozart's motivation for this music - whether it was a parody or imitating his beloved deceased pet. But Mozart makes a "bad" piece sound wonderful. I hope you enjoy my arrangement for 6 violins!
