The murder of Leclair in his Parisian apartment over 250 years ago remains an unsolved mystery and continues to baffle scholars and musicians alike. A number of suspects were questions, but no arrests were made. Who killed Leclair? We will never know for certain. What is certain however is Leclair's skill as composer and violinist. This sonata of 3 movements in G major is typical of his style: harmonious and melodic with a hint of virtuosity. Leclair's signature double stops are evident in the second movement (and are a real challenge to play!) along with typically Baroque ornamentation. Most sonatas of this era tend to be three movements in a fast-slow-fast tempo. Interestingly, this piece has all three movements marked as 'Allegro' but with the second movement marked as 'Allegro ma poco' (brisk, but a little). The engraving of Leclair in the thumbnail is one of only a handful of portraits of him. It's interesting that the manuscript he is holding is of the first movement of this sonata! I hope you enjoy them!
