James Hook is little known today, but was a prodigious composer with a catalogue of well over 2,000 works to his name, including songs, comic operas, concerti, sonatas and chamber music. He made his name playing the organ and harpsichord at London tea-rooms and pleasure gardens. He spent almost 50 years at Vauxhall Gardens, giving daily concerts and recitals. He was an early proponent of the piano and he composed and played the instrument in the early 1770s, shortly after it arrived in Britain. This trio is the first in a series of 6 trios - Op. 83 - originally composed for 3 flutes but which could also be played on other instruments. It consists of 3 movements in the traditional fast-slow-fast arrangement. The pieces are unfussy and uncomplicated but charming and jolly. I hope you like my rendition of this lovely trio for 3 violins.
