Kirkfield Lift Lock, Trent-Severn Waterway, Ontario

This video shows the Kirkfield Lift Lock #36 on the historic Trent-Severn Waterway in Ontario, Canada. This lock started operation in 1905 and is the second highest of its type in the world with a vertical lift of 14.9 metres (49 feet). Its "bigger brother" is the Peterborough Lift Lock #21 farther east on the T-S. The lock is situated at the highest point along the Waterway at 256.20 meters (840.5 ft) above sea level. The waterway climbs 182 metres (597 feet) from Lake Ontario to here and then drops 80 metres (262 feet) to reach Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. These boats, probably doing the 6,000-mile Great Loop cruise, are heading west towards Lake Huron. The lock operates on a fairly simple hydraulic balance principle. A constant water pressure supports each ram through connecting pipes below ground. When extra water is let into the upper chamber, a connecting valve is opened and the heavier chamber automatically descends, forcing up the lower chamber to start a new cycle. The raise/lower cycle takes less than two minutes but the entire locking time takes considerably longer to get boats in and out of the chambers, especially on busy summer weekends when multiple boats fill each chamber.
