From Treating to Preventing TB: Christopher Whalen at TEDxUGA

Dr. Christopher Whalen is the Earnest Corn Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the University of Georgia's College of Public Health. Dr. Whalen earned his M.D. in 1984 and his M.S. in Epidemiology & Biostatistics in 1992, both from Case Western Reserve University. In his early career he focused his research at the individual patient level, whereas now he takes a public health perspective and focuses on prevention of disease in populations. His research interests for the last 25 years involve the interaction of tuberculosis and HIV at the cellular, clinical, and population levels; more recently he has studied the transmission dynamic of M. tuberculosis in African cities. His study site is in Kampala, Uganda, where he has collaborated for over 20 years with Ugandan scientists at Makerere University and health officials from the Ugandan Ministry of Health. His research portfolio has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1993. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
