Built-in a strategic position on Mount Ala, during the Middle Ages Monteriggioni, had a reputation as an almost impregnable castle, above all thanks to the so-called "carbonaie", ditches filled with coal and wood which were set on fire in the event of a siege. Of the three original gates, only two remain today, Porta Romana and Porta Fiorentina. The third, which stood on the west side, was closed following the burial of the walls made at the beginning of the Renaissance to make them resistant to attacks by enemy gunners. The grandeur of the fortress also impressed Dante who spoke of it in Canto XXXI of the Inferno. Further worldwide fame came in 2009 following the setting, right within its walls, of the second episode of the famous video game saga Assassin's creed.
