Is your older dog slowing down…not having fun with his games anymore? Maybe your dog has hip dysplasia and you want to keep him comfortable for as long as possible? This video explains exactly how you can do that at home without drugs. Exercise is the best medicine…and here is the lowdown on how to use it. Program: Cat 1: Gym: weight shift 10 each way 3 sets Three legged stand 10 seconds per leg Proper flexed sit Cardio: Head up walking 20-30 yards at a time Texture change as often as you can Cat 2: Gym: Weight shift with front legs raised: 10 each way, 3 sets Three legged stand - lifted higher, 20 seconds per leg Sit to stand - flat surface, teach the stand command and help him if needed Side stepping - 5 steps each way 3 sets Cardio: Head up walking for longer and up and down a shallow slope (5-10 degrees max) Figure of eights across the face of a slope (not up and down) 5 each way. Find and negotiate little obstacles - step onto raised areas, go over sticks and logs Walk then trot through thick sand or water - wrist height up to a max of elbow height - build up to 5 minutes. Can add in hide and seek - hide his toy or a treat and let him go and find it. Cat 3: Gym: Weight shift with front legs raised a little higher on a soft squishy surface Side stepping with front legs raised - can make surface unstable if he can. Cavaletti increase difficulty by increasing distance between hurdles and add in slightly higher ones Bean cans - increase difficulty by bringing them closer together BONUS EXERCISE: sit to stands with front legs raised - escalate by increasing height of step. Cardio: Anything goes - just avoid high impact and high torsion landings from ball tosser used too high and too far. Do what your dog enjoys. And above all: HAVE FUN!!
