Five The '5 Studies for Pianoforte' by Dorothy Howell (1898-1982) were published in 1919, and issued as piano rolls by Aeolian in London by 1924. Here I present the first 4 of the 5 rolls, not having the final one. No. 1. ln G No. 2. In D No. 3. In F No. 4. In G sharp [missing: No. 5. In F] Interesting music that was fairly modern but seems not to have made much of a lasting impact, and isn't to be found online. Howell was nicknamed "The English Strauss" by Henry Wood when he premiered her Lamia symphonic poem in the 1919 Proms season; it was played in 6 following seasons. Clearly the roll issues followed this success, although sales weren't enough for me to locate all the rolls. Their issue shows how Aeolian made contemporary classical music available even though it had a small market - the same kind of ethos that underpinned the brand-new BBC of the period. Howell was a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music until 1970. Played on a Gotha Steck grand Pianola Piano. Pianolist Julian Dyer. Apologies for the loss of synchronisation between image and sound.
