This is a video about Genista, also called "French broom; soft broom; canary broom; Montepellier broom." Genista monspessulana is a perennial shrub found in our neighborhood. Unfortunately it is an aggressive invader, with growth that excludes native plants and wildlife. Its growth allowed unchecked is a major contributor to increasing fire hazard. These plants produce copious and long lived amounts of seed, and may resprout from the root crown if cut or grazed. Know what to look for and remove the plants, and sprouts at every opportunity. The best time to remove the plant is early spring when the ground is moist, the plants are small and have not yet seeded. Pulling the entire plant up and out of the soil is the most effective method of removal.
