If you are, there are some interesting facts you need to know. You will be required to learn and efficiently extend and operate a firefighter hose line (i.e. Taking a plug "4 inch supply hose line") Taking a plug ( also known as "connecting to a fire hydrant" to secure a water supply) Firefighters utilize hose lines to separate ourselves, victims, and the victims property from fire and potentially other hazardous substances. Typically hose lines are found on fire engines but they can also be found on fire brush trucks and quints (a blended fire apparatus equipped with fire engine and ladder capabilities) Throughout the fire academy, you will be repetitively trained in extended several different types of hose lines. We call these skill stations "HOSE LAYS." Each hose lay you will endure in the fire academy will have its own unique deployment procedure and allotted time allowed to complete the evolution (i.e. Taking a plug "4 inch supply hose line," allows 1:15 water to clamp, 3:15 water to truck) Bottom line is if you're a firefighter or are pursing the career of a firefighter, it is vital you understand how to take a plug. Here are the steps necessary to become proficient when extending and operating 4 inch supply hose line: (TAKING A PLUG) 4 INCH SUPPLY HOSE LINE DEPLOYMENT PROCEDURE: 1️⃣Clear left and right then safely step off the engine 2️⃣Pull the pin, grab the hydrant wrench and humat in your right hand, then grab the supply line with your left hand, shouldering left 3️⃣With the plug on the (captain's side), run 10-15 feet past the hydrant to have enough supply hose 4️⃣Place humat in front of you securing with both hands, then yell out to the engineer to "GO" 5️⃣Wait until first coupling drops. Listen and look confirming coupling is fully on the ground 6️⃣(For captain’s side), grab the hose with your left hand "flip the skip" or throw the hose line over the hydrant creating a safety loop. 7️⃣Place humat out of danger to you then remove the hydrant steamer cap 8️⃣Once the steamer cap is loose enough to remove with your hands, place the hydrant wrench on the top operating nut of the fire hydrant 9️⃣Finish removing the steamer cap 1️⃣0️⃣Grab and connect the humat to the hydrant 1️⃣1️⃣Adjust hose accordingly to keep from locking in the gutter and creating kinks 1️⃣2️⃣Ensure that the humat valve is closed and the clamp is placed on the hose line by saying "valve, clamp, and water," then open the hydrant 1️⃣3️⃣Once the hydrant is fully opened, take the hydrant wrench with you and ensure that there aren’t any kinks in the supply hose line 1️⃣4️⃣Return hydrant wrench back to it’s ready state 1️⃣5️⃣Begin your pull back with the supply hose until the next coupling in the hose line hits the ground 1️⃣6️⃣Once the coupling is on the ground, face your danger (the engine) and disconnect the coupling 1️⃣7️⃣Once the coupling is disconnected, throw the remaining excess supply line back on the engine (preventing trip hazards). Be sure to yell out “HEADACHE” when doing so 1️⃣8️⃣Grab the male end of the coupling and connect it to the intake valve 1️⃣9️⃣Adjust hose accordingly to ensure the hose doesn’t form major kinks or ends up under the engine 2️⃣0️⃣Ensure the engineer is ready for water, then open the hose clamp 2️⃣1️⃣Leave the hose clamp on the hose line 2️⃣2️⃣Ensure that there is not any kinks in the hose line 2️⃣3️⃣Don SCBA, grab tools, and meet up with your nozzle partner 2️⃣4️⃣Don mask 2️⃣5️⃣Ensure partner has no exposures or bad mask seals 2️⃣6️⃣Assist with hose line management Follow our guide, train hard, and allow our family here at firefighter ambitions help you and your family reach your goal of becoming a firefighter.
