Dr. Bryn Spejcher, a young audiologist who had recently moved to California for a job at UCLA, experienced a tragic and life-altering psychotic episode after inhaling an unusually potent dose of cannabis through a method called “stacking hits” from a bong. Having only minimal past exposure to marijuana, Bryn had never encountered any significant reactions. But during a casual social hangout with a friend—who regularly used cannabis—she unknowingly inhaled an extremely high concentration of THC, triggering a full-blown psychosis. In this state, she lost all sense of reality, control, and moral awareness, and began experiencing terrifying hallucinations and visions. Tragically, during this episode, she killed her friend and inflicted serious harm on herself. She awoke days later in the ICU, confused and devastated, later learning what had happened. Toxicology showed only THC in her system, and after thorough legal and psychological evaluations, experts unanimously concluded that the incident was the result of cannabis-induced psychosis. Her charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter, and she was sentenced to probation, counseling, and community service.
