Imagine this: a classroom bustling with 30 energetic students and one exhausted teacher. Sound familiar? Ninth grader Mark Waller is used to sharing his classrooms with lots (and lots) of other students. Then one day, he lucked-out with a comparatively tiny, 13-student math class. He was pleasantly surprised by the personalized attention he received and the level of engagement he felt—he aced the class even though math is not his strongest subject! In this determined Talk, Mark advocates for reducing class size as a way to: increase graduation rates, support equity, and enhance student/teacher relationships. "If class sizes were smaller, you wouldn't just see the difference in the results of our test scores, you would see it on our whole outlook on education." Mark Waller is an upper-school age student from the U.S. TED-Ed supports students in discovering, exploring and presenting their big ideas in the form of short, TED-style talks. In the TED-Ed Student Talk program, students work together to discuss and celebrate creative ideas. Students go through TED-Ed's flexible curriculum to develop their presentation literacy skills to help inspire tomorrow's TED speakers and future leaders. This presentation was completed by participating in a TED-Ed program and produced independently of the TED Conferences. Only approved participants are able to upload TED-Ed Student Talks.
