Today, I explore Chinatown in Bangkok, a vibrant area packed with history, markets, and some of the best street food in the city. With time to kill before my overnight bus to Phuket, I take a boat down the river, dive into the bustling streets, and follow a walking tour to uncover Chinatown’s hidden gems. I start at the Chinatown Gate, built in 1999, marking the entrance to this historic district. From there, I wander through the Yaowarat Road area, known for its gold shops, street food stalls, and endless alleyway markets selling everything from herbal medicine to seafood. Along the way, I stop at Wat Traimit, home to the world’s largest solid gold Buddha, and attempt to sneak a video before getting caught. Food is a major highlight in Chinatown, so I try some unique Thai-Chinese snacks, including crispy pancakes with sweet egg yolk and dim sum-style pork buns. The narrow market streets here are some of the oldest in Bangkok, with vendors selling everything imaginable. One of the strangest stops is Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, the most important Chinese Buddhist temple in Thailand. Inside, I find an unusual mix of religious offerings and what seems to be a very realistic statue… or was it a person? After a full day of exploring, I head back to pack up before catching my night bus to Phuket. This was just a first look at Bangkok’s Chinatown, but there’s so much more to see. I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.
