Southeast Asia has an impressive diversity of animal and plant species. Within the region, the Annamite Mountain range (which extend along the Lao-Vietnam border) is particularly recognized as one of the most biodiverse regions and critical for global biodiversity conservation and human sustainable livelihoods. The biodiversity and local communities’ livelihoods are under severe threat. Mostly from the unsustainable harvesting of natural resources (including plants and animals). Association Anoulak is a French association founded and directed by Camille, a French biologist. The Association is dedicated to biodiversity conservation and the support of local communities for resilient livelihoods in the Annamite Mountains of Laos. The Association has been conducting several programs in Nakai – Nam Theun National, in Khammouan Province in Laos, located in the heart of the Annamite Mountains. ~Biodiversity research~ As part of its biodiversity research programs, Association Anoulak has particularly been focusing on the most threatened and least know species. The Association has been implementing in collaboration with the national park a large-scale and long-term wildlife monitoring program to assess the effectiveness of conservation interventions aimed at protecting biodiversity. With the help of camera-traps set-up in the forest, the team is able to estimate the changes in animal populations across time and landscape. This information helps scientists and park staff to adapt their strategies. Many endemic species have been recorded over the years in the national park, including populations of global importance of the large-antlered muntjac, the Owston’s civet or pangolins. To survey and study arboreal species, Association Anoulak has also been setting camera-traps high up in the canopy. This has allowed the team to record awe-inspiring photos of endangered species such as gibbons, red-shanked doucs or hornbills. One of the target species that the Association is studying also includes gibbons. Gibbons are apes living in family groups; they produce loud calls in the morning. With the help of automatic recorders place in the forest, they are able to record their calls. These recording with help the technical team to develop future methods to survey gibbons and monitor their population size across the region of the Annamite Mountains. The association continues to expand its research on several other species including otters, elephants, and many others… ~Anti-poaching patrols~ Illegal poaching in the National Park have led in the past decades to the decline in biodiversity populations and to the local species extinction, including several globally threatened and endemic species. In order to conserve the current remaining populations of threatened species in the area and allow animal populations to recover from past hunting pressure, a robust law enforcement strategy is crucial. Association Anoulak has supported patrol teams, managed by the national park. All patrol teams are composed of trained villagers from the local communities, providing them the empowerment to protect their forests and an opportunity for employment. ~Community sustainable livelihoods~ Local communities in the national park are highly reliant on natural resources for their livelihoods, including for their food security. The opportunities for alternative income generation is very limited and often dependent on unsustainable or illegal collection of forest products. Association Anoulak supports villagers to development and implement their handicraft value chain strategy. This provides villagers with alternative income and also promote, transmit and preserve their traditional knowledge, crafting skills and cultural integrity. Association Anoulak also provides technical assistance to the local communities to establish a long-term natural resource management plan to ensure sustainability, community awareness and ownership. ~Conservation awareness~ Along with its conservation interventions, Association Anoulak aims to raise the profile of the Annamite Mountains to inform the general public and government partners of the importance of the region for biodiversity conservation at the national and global levels. Association Anoulak has been producing and publishing in collaboration with writers and artists some illustrated books about biodiversity found in the region. Ultimately, together with government and international partners, Association Anoulak hopes to protect this beautiful and unique part of the world: the Annamite Mountains; a home for an incredible diversity of species and culture and a national heritage for the country of Laos.
