On March 11, 2026, Senator Paula Simons spoke to Second Reading of Bill C-14, the Bail Sentencing and Reform Act. The bill intends to make it more difficult to receive bail, despite the reality that there has been an increase in denials, according to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. "Our remand centres are bearing the brunt of that reality," Senator Simons says in her speech. "If we actually care about making bail work – and keeping Canadians safe – we need to make sure that we properly resource our courts and our justice system, so that Crown prosecutors, legal aid defenders, judges and justices have the information and the time they need to make the right decisions for the right reasons for the right people." Stricter bail will only worsen a structural issue the Canadian justice system faces.
