Why I Wrote This Song Walking Lincoln's Way At The A-F-R-H” — by Bob Santero I wrote this song because walking through the A-F-R-H is never just a walk. It’s a quiet conversation with history. Every time I step onto those paths, I’m not just moving my feet — I’m walking through stories. Stories of men and women who served, who sacrificed, who raised families, who buried friends, who carried burdens most people will never see, and who now carry themselves a little slower but no less proud. Some days I walk past wheelchairs. Some days I walk past rollators. Some days I walk past empty benches where someone used to sit and wave. And yet, there is still life here. There is laughter coming out of the dining room. There are small conversations on porches. There are quiet prayers in the chapel. There are staff members who know our names and care enough to stop and ask how we’re doing. I’m a Caucasian man with white hair and a close-cropped beard, not some actor passing through. I live here. This is home. I wrote this song because I wanted to capture what it feels like to belong to a place that carries both weight and warmth at the same time. This song is my way of saying: We are not forgotten. We are not finished. We are still walking. Not fast. Not flashy. But steady. Purposeful. Together. When I walk these grounds, I feel gratitude. I feel humility. I feel responsibility to honor the people who came before me and the friends who walk beside me now. That feeling deserved music. It deserved memory. It deserved to be preserved. That’s why I wrote this song Thank you, Bob Santero
