Defending Their Territory… Just before noon yesterday, an Immature or Sub-adult bald eagle was seen soaring near the Lookout Snag. It circled, then confidently landed on Jackie and Shadow's favorite branch. Hmm… it appeared this youngster was about to cross paths with our beloved couple. As the large young raptor perched and groomed its beautiful feathers, it seemed healthy and well fed. Jackie had another thing in mind though and was not going to tolerate a visitor occupying their branch. As Jackie made her move, the alert youngster turned, looked up, and saw her coming. Jackie seemed to just drop out of the sky as she vocalized loudly and reclaimed the branch. Just after the young eagle took flight, Shadow swooped down and chased it off before joining Jackie in their treasured spot. Jackie spent much of the afternoon on their snag trees in the eagle territory. She was definitely on alert as she made several warning and peal calls while perched. The sub adult returned and made some fly bys and then just before nightfall, Jackie was visibly upset by something else nearby. Her calls were loud and urgent. Shadow flew in and landed below her but was hidden by the pine branches. Jackie floated down and joined him. They left there and both were now on high alert as they headed toward their nest area. Darkness was falling quickly as they sped by and landed somewhere unseen. Both were still vocalizing loudly. It turned out this time they were now chasing a visiting Adult bald eagle out of the area. All three headed back toward the Cactus Snag area, then circled back again, and while we hope Shadow chased the intruder further away, Jackie made her way to the nest tree, landing safely in the attic. It was already quite dark and she stayed only a few minutes in the attic. She was heard still vocalizing for several minutes after she left. As we are not always able to see first hand all that Jackie and Shadow deal with in their habitat and territory, it's pretty amazing that we can witness unscripted wildlife at times such as this, even if from a distance. They are a great team and are definitely fierce defenders of what is theirs.
