This panel discussion took place as part of the ifa event series Totally Glocally https://www.ifa.de/en/research/totall... in cooperation with the city of Stuttgart and the Institut français Stuttgart. Defending Academic Freedom: Developments and Challenges in the US and EU Like freedom of expression, academic freedom is one of the fundamentals of democratic societies. However, the political purpose of academic independence goes beyond mere freedom of expression: it protects truth-seeking processes from political interference. This topic is especially relevant and sensitive, given that academic freedom is facing significant threats worldwide. How can universities and research institutions become more resilient in order to secure their independence from funding bodies, whether state or private sector? How might illiberal practices affecting higher education institutions and academics themselves be described in more detail? And which intellectual currents are under particular attack in places where democracies are undergoing processes of autocratisation? Moderation: Melinda Crane, US-educated lawyer and political economist, former chief political correspondent of Deutsche Welle Panelists: • Rachel Beatty Riedl, Professor of Politics in the Department of Government and Peggy J. Koenig '78 Director of the Centre on Global Democracy at Cornell University • Maria Sibylla Lotter, Professor of Ethics and Aesthetics at Ruhr University Bochum • Ned Hall, Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University and co-president of the Council on Academic Freedom at Harvard The discussion was held in English with simultaneous translation into German.
