SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE PARISH #5: OAKINGTON AND WESTWICK Welcome back to South Cambridgeshire folks and to Oakington and Westwick, a small parish located to the immediate Northeast of the A14, and to the Northwest of Cambridge. Its made up of two settlements – the tiny Westwick, and the much larger Oakington. Oakington was quite a large village in the Middle Ages. It was listed as “Hochinton” in the Domesday Book and the name means "Hocca’s estate". The Black Death decimated the population in the 14th century, but since then its had a steady regrowth, barring a short period when a third of the villagers left for Adelaide, Australia, thanks to poverty and unemployment. Today the combined settlements of Oakington and Westwick have around 1,400 residents. Oakington was once considered a hotbed of religious dissent, and in an enclosed area of the churchyard here you’ll find three graves belonging to the Oakington Martyrs – and they aren’t the only notable burials in this place either. To the North of the village there was once an airbase, and Oakington’s close ties to the RAF are depicted on its modern village sign. Speaking of planes, in 1909 two Oakington residents built a monoplane in an attempt to win a prize offered by the Daily Mail for being the first Britons to fly a circular mile in an all-British aeroplane. Oh, and this one also features the longest guided busway in the world. There’s a lot here, so without further ado, let’s get into it **** #OakingtonandWestwick, #Oakington, #Westwick, #RAF, #Martyrs, #NonConformist, #Religion, #Saxons, #Burials, #Buses, #Railways, #Stations, #Northstowe, #Cambridge, #Cambridgeshire, #Chess, #Water, #Ponds, #Pubs, #Churches, #Chapels, **** RAF: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england... https://www.ukairfieldguide.net/airfi... http://www.ukairfields.org.uk/oakingt...
