When we talk about epigenetic clocks, one of the key innovations of the last few years has been the development of techniques to reduce statistical noise to make them more accurate at detecting biological age. Put another way, there is a big difference between first-generation and second-generation epigenetic clocks. The second-generation clocks go a step beyond tracking chronological age by statistically regressing more conventional health-related biomarkers. This differentiating strategy used in new epigenetic clocks, namely PhenoAge and GrimAge, may be really important in future trial design for many studies. Listen as recent podcast guest from episode 72 of the FoundMyFitness podcast, Dr. Morgan Levine, describes the importance of this step in making her epigenetic clock PhenoAge and that of her postdoctoral mentor GrimAge more accurate in their ability to detect biological age and epigenetic age acceleration.
