It has variants from Ilo-ilo, Mindoro, Laguna, and Leyte. The most esteemed variant of Lulay is the one from the Tagalog region, it was broadly popular in the late 19th Century and eventually became a national favorite—it is sung and danced at weddings and social gatherings. The song tells us of a young man's attempts to persuade the girl of his dreams into marrying him.
