The Keres Defense is a variation of the Closed Ruy Lopez. It begins after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 a5 and the move a5 is the Keres Defense or the Smyslov Variation. Paul Keres played 1...e5 on the highest level for decades. In the Closed Ruy Lopez, he employed the Chigorin, and the Karpov (Nd7), sometimes actually called the Keres. But, his main contribution to Closed Spanish theory is the move 9...a5. He played a5, the Keres Defense, in 9 games from 1955 to 1961. Before and after that, he employed Nd7. His score with a5 was astonishing - two wins and 7 draws, and three of the draws almost seem prearranged, they weren't fighting games. Why he stopped playing it, I don't know. Objectively, the move a5 isn't great.
