So, around late March I started messing around with actually getting a proper menu system up and running. Unreal Engine 4's UMG/Widget systems are actually pretty tricky (to me at least) and took a lot of effort to figure out at first. But as time went on and I got more comfortable, it actually became strangely addicting and I got a little carried away. What started as a testbed eventually became what you see here; an almost fully featured and robust menu system that works seamlessly with both controller input and mouse and keyboard! There's a lot of under the hood that I had to figure out as well, because even stuff as simple as the default buttons didn't work the way that I wanted them to; so I ended up writing my own input handling elements from scratch. I also added in preview-video support (to show a little bit of edited footage of particular gamemodes in the mode selection screen; right now I just threw in some slightly older footage as placeholder) and an in-menu 3D model preview of the currently selected machine. Of course, the entire menu system is almost completely populated by placeholder content right now as well. However, all of the UMG elements are dynamically populated from data assets; so when I go to make the final content it will simply be a couple of clicks to get the final assets represented in the menu properly. That will also make it very easy to add in new content into the base game in the future too; if I ever decide to do that. Also, while the menu isn't in a completely final state (there's no sound, there's also quite a bit of inconsistency in the drop shadows, spacing between elements isn't perfect etc.) this will probably be very close to how the final menus end up. I quite like the simplicity, responsiveness, and straightforward feeling of it. For some reason the gameplay at the tail end of the video was very choppy. Not too sure what caused that, so I'll have to tweak my recording process to avoid that in the future. The game runs butter smooth; I swear! XD As always, thank you for your patience. I'm still chugging along! Learning new parts of Unreal Engine 4 as I make Aero GPX into a fully-featured game unfortunately adds a lot more time to the development of the game, but it's definitely coming along nicely. I'm approaching the moment in development when I turn from developing these base systems and start working on the actual content of the game, and that's when things will get really fun.
