The Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway was the backbone of Vancouver Island. It connected communities, opened resource lands, and drove the growth of towns and industry as the Island expanded around the tracks. But the railway began as more than transportation. It grew out of a political promise made at Confederation and became one of the most controversial railway deals in British Columbia history.
