DESCRIPTION: Positioning is a term coined by this author describing the technique of placing yourself in close proximity to the person, place or organization for whom you want to work, and/or the position that fulfills your career goal. Positioning is a paradigm shift from the traditional job search or waiting for the job to come to you. The traditional job search is like a funnel which is designed to funnel a large number of applicants down to a finalist or the last person standing. Positioning is where you proactively seek out the position you seek where you are the only applicant competing for the position. Metaphorically, positioning is a process of building a bridge to your next job or position. There are five steps to positioning. First, determine your next job or position. Second, determine the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences needed for the job. Third, where and how do you obtain the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences for the position sought. Fourth, case the joint, find out where you want to work, who will hire you, and how you can fit into the organization. Fifth, seek out the person who can hire you. It is a one-on-one interview because you are the only applicant. Supporting the positioning approach is that 50% to 70% of the job positions are not fully advertised. This suggests that a variation of the positioning approach is already being widely used. This video introduces the viewer to the positioning approach and provides the basics of the five step process. Toward building a bridge to your next job or position. WEBPAGE: Check out the webpage: robertbkauffman.com/boatingsafety/
