Safety interpretation is defined as a branch of interpretation that utilizes the principles of interpretation to facilitate safety. Safety is a new component for the field of interpretation. It is a natural fit. The question is how do we get people to be safe because they want to be safe? Safety interpretation helps to answer this question. Freeman Tilden, the father of interpretation and a national park ranger, presented six principles of interpretation in his book titled Interpreting Our Heritage. Several of the principles include the following. The message needs to relate to the person receiving it. Interpretation seeks revelation. It tells a story. It seeks provocation. This presentation focuses on applying safety interpretation to warning signs. Traditional warning signs may not be enough. Normal warning signs often fall short in their messaging. In contrast, safety interpretation signs tell a story that relates to the person reading the sign. Safety interpretation signs can communicate “what” and “why” the danger is dangerous. Compare the effectiveness of two warning signs. The message of the first sign reads, “DANGER - Treacherous Water - Death or Severe Body Injury Is Likely - No Swimming, Wading or Trespassing.” The water behind a low head dam is moving fast, but what makes it treacherous. It is the river wide perfect hydraulic behind the dam that can recirculate you. Known as the “drowning machine,” it is a killer. The hydraulic is not obvious. A safety interpretation sign tells the story of how the hydraulic kills you and why it is dangerous. The second sign states, “DANGER - Avoid Strainers - Water passes through them, you don’t.” In addition, the sign shows a picture of a strainer with a swimmer stuck on the strainer. It is a short story, but the sign tells you what a strainer is and why it is dangerous. Water passes through the strainer, but you don’t. The revelation is that it may be desirable to avoid strainers. Safety interpretation signs are a step up from the traditional warning sign. This presentation applies safety interpretation to signage. In addition, it suggests the importance of safety interpretation as a component of interpretation.
