The rubric MIND – SOBERNESS represents a distinctive mental state characterized by gravity, seriousness, calmness, absence of emotional excitement, and controlled affect. In homoeopathic practice, this rubric occupies an important position because it reflects not merely a temperament trait but often a deeper constitutional state. Soberness may appear as a natural personality disposition, a pathological withdrawal, a compensatory psychological defense, or a miasmatic manifestation. This article explores the word origin of “soberness,” its philosophical and religious interpretations, historical development in Indian and international thought, and its repertorial significance—especially in classical sources such as Kent’s Repertory. A comparative analysis with allied rubrics such as seriousness, taciturnity, sadness, gloominess, cheerfulness (absence), and emotional indifference is presented. Psychological correlates including introversion, affective flattening, and over-controlled personality patterns are discussed. Six prominent remedies are elaborated in depth: Aurum metallicum, Natrum muriaticum, Sepia officinalis, Calcarea carbonica, Lycopodium clavatum, and Phosphorus—with emphasis on their characteristic mental states, miasmatic background, clinical presentation, and differentiation. The article concludes with practical guidance for identifying this rubric during case-taking and avoiding superficial interpretation.
