How many flowers do you need to make a 60ft Christmas decoration? Join the National Trust team at Cotehele in Cornwall to find out how they use flowers grown on the estate to create this festive masterpiece every year. Hanging a flower garland in the Great Hall at Cotehele has been a Christmas tradition since 1956, but it’s grown a lot since then. Today, approximately 30,000 flowers are grown at Cotehele to create this impressive decoration, and every year it has a slightly different design. At the beginning of each year, National Trust staff and volunteers plant thousands of flower seeds on the estate. When the flowers bloom, they’re picked and hung in bunches to dry before being carefully positioned to create the colourful Christmas display. The whole process takes 10 months, from planting the first seed to placing the final flower.
