Honeysuckle Creek 1967-1981

This complex, along with its cousin over the ridge at Orroral Valley, was used during the heady days of NASA's space program. Honeysuckle Creek was used during the Apollo program, from 1967 to 1974, and when that project ended it became part of the Deep-Space Tracking Network until it was closed in 1981. Like the station at Orroral Valley, the buildings fell into a state of disrepair, with the Commonwealth Government having little interest in maintaining them, and they were extensively vandalised. It wasn't until after ACT self-government (1989) that the site was razed, leaving only the concrete foundations, and distressed-steel panels were installed featuring information placards. A camping ground with picnic and toilet facilities was constructed adjacent the site of the station. Today all that remains of the facility that received the first images of Neil Armstrong stepping onto the surface of the Moon are the reinforced concrete foundations and carparking areas.
